GET A JUMP START TO READING

Reading Enrichment for young children (ages 4 and up).

Kindergarten registration goes on in March and April in many school districts .Get a Jump Start to Reading!

There are many precursor skills to reading and writing that lay an important foundation for future literacy development. A good tutor can facilitate this learning through a variety of fun and engaging activities that will develop your child's skills at an age when he is ripe for learning! Developmentally appropriate activities are geared to your child's age and ability level so that he is challenged without feeling overwhelmed. Your child will take pride in his new skills, stimulating his desire to learn even more!

A great Jump Start to reading includes:

  • Instruction in reading readiness skills such as letter identification, letter-sound knowledge, building a sight word vocabulary, and general book knowledge such as left-to-right progression, and more!
  • The development of phonological awareness. This term refers to sound and word knowledge, including an understanding of rhyme, syllabication, segmentation and blending.
  • Exercises in memory and concentration. This can be done with lots of great games that include songs, matching, and making patterns, for example. These exercises are also designed to gradually increase your child’s attention span.
  • Practice in fine-motor activities as a precursor to the development of good handwriting, including work with a variety of manipulatives such as beads, mini-art projects that require cutting and pasting, coloring, etc.
  • Formal handwriting instruction when your child is ready (usually near age five).
  • Regular read-alouds where the child can listen to a story that is interesting to him. While reading aloud the teacher models the process of reading for meaning, with accuracy and fluency. The child also develops his comprehension skills by retelling the story or drawing a picture from a favorite scene of the book.
  • Repeated practice of mastered skills in order to develop fluency and confidence in all newly acquired skills!
