Mike- Math, all levels
(incl. AP Calculus, Algebra, Geometry, Trig, Statistics, Discrete
Math, etc.) for Middle & High School, early college; NY
Regents (all Math sections) Mike
earned his B.A. in Mathematics from Iona College as a perpetual
Deans List student for 4 years (3.8 GPA in his major), and
is currently tackling additional coursework toward an advanced
degree. As a student, Mike was team leader of other select
students in a prominent nationwide contest of mathematical
modeling in which his team received honorable mention.
Mike has been tutoring students from middle school through
college levels for several years in a wide range of math subjects
up through college level Calculus and Discrete Math. He has
also instructed 90 Westchester County students from grades
9 through 12 in preparation for the New York Regents math
exams in which 96% of his students enjoyed success. No stranger
to high school honors in his own rite, Mike received the award
for the highest high school mathematics average out of nearly
80 enrolled participants in the course..
Still a young educator, Mike' background in working with
so many students at varying levels has provided him the experience,
insight and capability to adjust his teaching methods and
approaches to individual learning styles. He states that to
be effective as a one-on-one instructor, you must be able
to first learn that person's learning method, and then use
whatever skills you have as a tutor to present the information
simply and coherently.
Although mathematics is clearly the focus of Mike’s current professional
endeavors, he is also a member of the National Political Science Honor Society – Pi
Sigma Alpha.
Matt
- Writing, Enlglish Asked
to describe his tutoring style, Matt responded, “I don’t
think I have a single style. Students look for tutors precisely
because they need something different – a different
set of eyes to look at a creative piece, someone who can express
expectations or methods in a different way, or maybe offer
a different method of motivation.” Although Matt’s
adaptability is a great asset, he works hard to focus kids
toward practical and objective goals. “Every student
writes to understand his thoughts more clearly and express
those thoughts effectively,” he says. “And every
student reads so that he or she can understand others more
clearly. If I have taught them well, they can do these things
and, hopefully, understand a bit more about themselves.”
A cum laude graduate of Colby College, Matt was named to
the dean’s list all eight semesters and also earned
the John B. Foster Award for excellence in classical literature.
He is most proud, however, of having learned from Pulitzer
Prize winning author Richard Russo and many other prominent
scholars, including Michael Burke and Cedric Bryant. He also
had the opportunity to begin tutoring at Colby’s Farnham
Writers’ Center, where he tutored students from Colby
and surrounding colleges on writing in all disciplines. Matt’s
essays and short stories have been published in various literary
magazines.
Aside from reading and writing, Matt enjoys fly-fishing,
exercising, and playing and coaching ice hockey.

Irene- Middle/Upper
School English/Language Arts Irene is a Connecticut state-certified
English/Language Arts teacher for grades 7-12. Irene earned her Masters
in English Education from New York University, and graduated, also from
NYU, with a B.S. in English and American Literature. Although an English
major, she also studied calculus and the sciences to prepare for a career
in veterinary medicine. It was after serving with the Literacy Volunteers
of America, where she tutored two recently immigrated women from Columbia,
that teaching in reading and writing as a Language Arts educator surfaced
as her true passion.
Her pedagogical philosophy is based upon students being active learners.
She believes that students need to take charge of their own learning, and
to do so they must be thoroughly engaged in the material. In her current
Fairfield County seventh grade English classroom, Irene has developed a curriculum
to engage all students. She includes activities that reach students of all
levels and learning styles (whether kinesthetic, spatial. logical, etc.),
to ensure that each student is successful in his or her endeavors. Writing
is of utmost importance in her classroom. She believes every student can
write well with enough effort and proper instruction.
Irene is a new mom who enjoys spending time with her daughter, husband,
two cats and dog.

Holme conveyed to us his feeling about being a tutor and teacher this
way: “I can share my enthusiasm for science while stimulating young
minds with the excitement of learning…” and enjoy “…the
more gratifying interactions that occur when working with young people.”
It should probably come as no surprise that Holme is a member of the Sierra
Club, has a special interest in reptiles and amphibians, and enjoys travel
to exotic locales.
