Jon: Physics, Calculus AB & BC, Statistics (each up to AP level); all HS Math, SAT Math
Jon's fascination in physics started (as with many of us) by pondering unsolved mysteries, such as the birth of the universe, where “normal” physics breaks down – but, he just kept on probing. For the past year, Jon has worked as a research assistant at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory where he studied high-energy collisions from inside the Collider Detector at Fermilab. He presented his findings at the American Physical Society’s April Conference in 2009. Jon’s ability to explain difficult concepts, his passion for the sciences and mathematics, and his engaging, yet professional demeanor, drive his enthusiasm to work one-on-one with students who either need bringing up to speed or crave further enrichment. To maintain an all-important balance to his life, Jon stays fit by jogging, swimming, biking and practicing judo. He also enjoys music, cooking, and chess. Megan C: Writing/Reading sections of SAT, PSAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE; Basic & Advanced Level Writing
Megan has since continued to professionalize the writing expertise that she has so skillfully imparted on her students. Having completed her Masters in Publishing from Emerson College in 2008, Megan is now a senior editor at a technology and market research company in Cambridge. Before moving to Boston, Megan was a Dean's List graduate of the University of Connecticut with a degree in English and Journalism, where she was also a New England Scholar. Megan had been trained to instruct small group SAT prep in the Critical Reading and Writing sections, however she soon decided that one-on-one test prep offered the best opportunity for success on the SAT. This way, the student and tutor may concentrate on the areas requiring the most attention, while simultaneously learning the all-important test navigation techniques. Megan then broadened her test prep repertoire to include the “verbal sections” of the ACT, SSAT and ISEE. In addition to test prep, Megan tutors students from elementary school through college in all forms of writing from basic essays through college level theses. We are delighted to have Megan’s skills to offer – now in the Boston area! Theresa: Elementary Ed, Orton Gillingham, Writing at ALL levels
Theresa has worked in both urban and suburban schools, and she has been particularly committed to supporting youth and families in the city of Boston since 1996. As part of that endeavor, she created an after school program for elementary school students. In 2004, Theresa shifted gears to teach younger students and became certified in elementary school. She has taught all subjects in Grades 4 and 5, including MCAS test preparation for the past five years. Theresa’s former supervisor writes, “Theresa’s talents are extensive. She is one of the most exceptional teachers with whom I have ever had the privilege of working. She is highly creative, organized, and responsive to the diverse needs of her students. She has a reputation of excellence that includes her wealth of experience successfully working with diverse populations and her ability to motivate participants with her warmth, humor, knowledge and experience of education.” The principal of her elementary school adds, “Theresa uses developmentally appropriate instructional and assessment practices. She is upbeat and positive and exhibits and displays what we want for all students, i.e. to be excited about learning, to work hard, and most importantly, to be an engaged, lifelong learner.” When Theresa is not teaching, she celebrates life’s firsts through the eyes and experiences of her one-year-old son. Karen, as with many talented and dedicated teachers, is a career changer. When offered an opportunity for continued growth in her former business career, Karen instead decided that this was the moment to begin the life change she had been visualizing – to be a teacher. The decision was all the more difficult, as Karen would need to accomplish this as a full-time mom with young children. Karen dedicated herself concurrently to her education and her children, even taking the opportunity to volunteer in her children’s classrooms. She went on to graduate with a 3.62 GPA from Wheelock College majoring in Human Development with concentration in Elementary Education. In 2008, Karen was awarded her Massachusetts Educator’s License. Karen’s practical experience in the business world, her responsibilities as a mom and, of course, her achievement as an education student have proven to make her a valuable asset to several elementary schools in the Boston area. Her experience has been in both classroom and one-on-one settings. Not to be limited to children, Karen has also volunteered at her local library to assist adults in reading. Karen rewards herself with running, reading, decorating and listening to music.
