ASK THE TUTOR
Dear Tutor: “My 6 th grader needs to choose a language when she enters school in the fall. I can see that our school offers courses in Latin. But isn’t Latin a “dead language?” Shouldn’t my daughter be studying a modern language?
Answer: Not necessarily. Latin is the "mother" and basis of the Romance languages.
"Her children" include French, Romanian, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. By learning Latin,
doors are immediately opened to being able to translate, read, and understand numerous modern
languages. Sixty-six percent of English comes from Latin. It has been proven that students
who take Latin receive much higher scores on the Verbal section of the SAT than students who
take a modern language. For more information about the benefits of studying Latin, please
read our featured article, "Why Latin?" in our Articles Page. Thanks for writing!
