Her tutoring experience has spanned a wide array of subject matters and needs, from cultivating bilingualism in a preschooler to designing and teaching an original SAT curriculum to a class full of high school juniors out of a kitchen (in which each student improved at least 140 points and the most-improved increased by almost 400 points!). She is passionate about teaching the logic underlying languages and accurate linguistic usage, especially in the contexts of Latin and SAT preparation. She also has a fondness for teaching AP subjects, having taken 9 AP Tests herself as a high school student.

Erika: Latin
Special area: Piano Tutoring
Located in North Conway, NH
Erika
holds her certification and credentials in Connecticut and
California as a Secondary Latin teacher. She earned her Bachelor
of Arts Degree in Classical Studies and Secondary Education
from Regis College in Weston, MA in 2002. Erika grew up in
Redding, CT and hasn’t stopped studying Latin since
her first class in 7th grade! She fell in love with the Roman
Empire’s language, unique culture, and the brilliant
people who lived in the Roman Empire. Now her middle school
students are drawn by the same excitement and passion and
share it with her; excelling not only in the classroom, but
also at CT State Latin Day, COLT poetry contests, and the
National Latin Exam.
Erika helps her students learn and retain Latin by making it easy to remember
associations, using mnemonic devices, and breaking the concepts down to become
more logical by utilizing flash cards, charts, and color to visually and
mentally organize the intensive grammar into a student’s mind. Of course,
Erika always manages to keep it fun and enjoyable at the same time!
Erika belongs to several professional associations including the American
Classical League (ACL), Connecticut Organization of Latin Teachers (COLT),
Classical Association of New England (CANE) and the Vergilian Society. Erika
has done extensive work associated with the Cambridge Latin Course during
her summers. She spent a week at Tufts University in 2003 continuing her
education and sharing the latest advances in teaching Latin with her colleagues.
In 2004, she spent two weeks with members of the Vergilian Society exploring villas, palaces, forts, gardens, museums, and archaeological sites of Roman Britain.
Erika hopes to head to Italy next summer to assist archaeologists in the
excavations of the Ancient buried city of Pompeii.
Erika enjoys playing competitive volleyball, waterskiing,
jet-skiing, snow-skiing, mountain biking, chaperoning annual
trips to Italy, visiting National Parks around the United
