Chitra - Elementary Ed, Study & Organizational Skills, Research Skills, Report Writing, Art Instruction Chitra holds a Masters Degree in Humanities and an undergraduate degree in English & History. She has earned teacher certification in Connecticut (K-6), New York and California in Elementary Ed., and Art Education (K-12) in New York.
Sensitive to the classroom teacher’s daunting task of bringing out the best in each individual student in a highly competitive academic environment, Chitra feels that many potentially good students will inevitably fall behind; while others may slack off from being under-stimulated, hence leading to a detrimental complacency. Chitra (having grown up in India where the benefits of one-on-one instruction have long been appreciated) adapts to her student’s learning style and pace, identifies existing weaknesses and “holes” in grasping of the current coursework, and then applies a tailored approach to build the student’s skills and confidence.
Chitra’s classroom experience includes several years teaching elementary grades in Connecticut, New York and California, and she has tutored children from elementary through middle school in study, organizational and research skills. Well-versed in teaching all elementary level subjects, Chitra’s specializes in writing (including report writing) in addition to study and org skills – and ART. Chitra has headed up after-school art programs and other children’s art workshops. Chitra has also been a counselor for the Connecticut Parents as Teachers Program.
Chitra has recently embarked on teaching meditation for school age children to develop life-long skills to deal with stress.
Beyond teaching and tutoring, Chitra is a professional painter who is constantly working on new methods of abstract expressionism and participating in local art shows. She is widely travelled in Asia and Europe always bringing back mementoes to share with her students.

to their personal learning styles and needs.
Autumn graduated from Smith College cum laude with a degree
in Spanish Literature, and has lived and studied abroad in
Madrid, Spain. She recently completed her Masters in Romance
Languages at the University of Pennsylvania where she continued
to foster and broaden her language teaching skills. She also
created and developed new strategies for making learning fun
by drawing on student’s aptitudes from musical abilities
to propensities with color awareness, logic or kinesthesia.
One of her former colleagues notes Autumn’s “ability
to perceive each student’s unique paths to teachable
moments in order to determine how best to reach and teach
them.”

Matt
- Writing, Enlglish Asked
to describe his tutoring style, Matt responded, “I don’t
think I have a single style. Students look for tutors precisely
because they need something different – a different
set of eyes to look at a creative piece, someone who can express
expectations or methods in a different way, or maybe offer
a different method of motivation.” Although Matt’s
adaptability is a great asset, he works hard to focus kids
toward practical and objective goals. “Every student
writes to understand his thoughts more clearly and express
those thoughts effectively,” he says. “And every
student reads so that he or she can understand others more
clearly. If I have taught them well, they can do these things
and, hopefully, understand a bit more about themselves.”
A cum laude graduate of Colby College, Matt was named to
the dean’s list all eight semesters and also earned
the John B. Foster Award for excellence in classical literature.
He is most proud, however, of having learned from Pulitzer
Prize winning author Richard Russo and many other prominent
scholars, including Michael Burke and Cedric Bryant. He also
had the opportunity to begin tutoring at Colby’s Farnham
Writers’ Center, where he tutored students from Colby
and surrounding colleges on writing in all disciplines. Matt’s
essays and short stories have been published in various literary
magazines.
Aside from reading and writing, Matt enjoys fly-fishing,
exercising, and playing and coaching ice hockey.

Gretchen-
French, Economics Gretchen tutored for the first time during a college semester abroad in
Dijon, France. She met a local family who wanted their two young girls to
learn English. Gretchen thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was amazed
at how quickly the children could pick up new language skills. Gretchen also
student taught in a French middle school English class. These two experiences
fostered a lasting interest in helping others learn a new language and culture.
Gretchen is a graduate of Colgate University, where she received her BA
in French and Economics. She graduated summa cum laude and received the Award
for Excellence in French Studies for consistently outstanding performance
in French. After college, Gretchen worked in consulting and online marketing

in English Education from New York University, and graduated, also from
NYU, with a B.S. in English and American Literature. Although an English

that teaching in reading and writing as a Language Arts educator surfaced
as her true passion.
Her pedagogical philosophy is based upon students being active learners.
She believes that students need to take charge of their own learning, and
to do so they must be thoroughly engaged in the material. In her current
Fairfield County seventh grade English classroom, Irene has developed a curriculum
to engage all students. She includes activities that reach students of all
levels and learning styles (whether kinesthetic, spatial. logical, etc.),
to ensure that each student is successful in his or her endeavors. Writing
is of utmost importance in her classroom. She believes every student can
write well with enough effort and proper instruction.
Irene is a new mom who enjoys spending time with her daughter, husband,
two cats and dog.

Holme -
Advanced Placement / Gen'l Levels Chemistry & Biology, General
Holme is highly accomplished
both as an educator and scientific researcher.
Before becoming a full-time teacher at
both the high school and college levels,
Holme was a postdoctoral fellow at Yale
University’s School of Medicine
where he developed a strong background in cell biology and cell culture techniques.
He was later a staff fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where
his research required extensive expertise in molecular biology in addition
protein biochemistry and cell biology skills.
Holme received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of California,
and prior to that his M.S. Diplom In Biologie/Biochemie (Biology/Biochemistry)
from Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat, Freiburg, Germany. Holme’s undergrad
work was done at the University of Vermont and University of Florida where
he earned his B.S. in Zoology.
In his role as educator, Holme is triple state-certified in Connecticut
to teach High School Chemistry, Biology and General Science, and has taught
at both the Advanced Placement and general levels at several Connecticut
schools. At the college level, Holme has been a visiting professor of Biochemistry
and Chemistry at Georgetown University in Washington DC where he taught several
undergraduate classes, including a general biochemistry course for upper
division majors, an upper level biochemistry laboratory, among others. Nowadays,
Holme will be found conducting his classes in the SUNY system of colleges
in New York, and of course, taking on a few very fortunate tutorial students.
Holme conveyed to us his feeling about being a tutor and teacher this
way: “I can share my enthusiasm for science while stimulating young
minds with the excitement of learning…” and enjoy “…the
more gratifying interactions that occur when working with young people.”
It should probably come as no surprise that Holme is a member of the Sierra
Club, has a special interest in reptiles and amphibians, and enjoys travel
to exotic locales.

An excerpt from a recent letter to us from the mother of a tutoring student of Kim reads, "Bryant needed support from someone outside of home and school, Kim has been that person. In the 2½ months of tutoring, Bryant's grades have risen by a full grade point.Thank you for introducing Kim to us; she has shown genuine concern and support for Bryant and his academic achievement. She has made the difference."
